Shenanigans at the Brewery in Los Angeles

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Photos here.

Last weekend found us in Los Angeles, at an artist warehouse complex known as the Brewery. The itinerary was only to engage in varying degrees of jackassery with clowns, mostly of the Cirque Berzerk variety. In this we were successful, though the Mutaytor is fired for not showing up.

It is likely that we return late next month for the big Cirque Berzerk show Beneath — more info on that later.

Photos from Basura Sagrada, the Burning Man temple fundraiser

Trash-master Shrine held his Burning Man temple fundraiser, Basura Sagrada, at the DNA Lounge last Thursday. Continuing the tradition started by David Best in 2000, Shrine is undertaking the mighty task of providing Burning Man with its temple. In 2007 he brought the Tasseograph Trash Tea Temple (pictured here and here) which has also made appearances at Yuri’s Night and Lightning in a Bottle.

Entertainment this eve included Bad Unkl Sista, donning a long strip of cloth then painted live by Shrine; performances by Vau de Vire Society and Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque; a silent auction of many lovely pieces of artwork — paintings, tables, suitcases, clothes and jewelry; and a full-sized painting made live by Shrine.

Jill Tracy and the Malcontent Orchestra for the Bittersweet Constrain CD release

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

The chanteuse Jill Tracy brought me in to shoot her CD release party for her latest album, the Bittersweet Constrain. Joined by the entire Malcontent Orchestra — including Paul Mercer on violin, Erica Mulkey (Unwoman) on cello, Daniel Fabricant on bass, Randall Odell on percussion, Josh Brown on sitar, 12-stringed chapman stick player Alex Nahas, guitarist Matty Rue, and playing Jill’s own piano, Michael McIntosh — dark waltzes and murderous ballads were the fare that evening. It was deliciously funereal and marvelously wicked.

Here are the photos.

Death Guild Thunderdome Burning Man fundraiser at Ace Auto, San Francisco — Photos

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

See the photos here!

Last night was the fundraiser to bring the Thunderdome to Burning Man — yes, that one straight out of Mad Max. There were dome fights (with foam bats (and fists) instead of knives), performances, DJs, drinks, flame and attitude.

May’s Bohemian Carnival photos and upcoming events

See the photos here!

San Francisco’s much loved Carnival came out of hiatus last Friday for the latest installment of Bohemian Carnival, that raucous and sexy alternative to ZinZanni’s (since we won’t serve you dinner! (though the DNA Lounge will)).

Besides your hosts Vau de Vire Society and Gooferman, performances by Extra Action Marching Band, Blaze, Fou Fou Ha!, that silly German Torsten (an absolute riot), and the Cowboy Derby Girls rocked the night.
