2nd Skin at the Exploratorium

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Friday night at the Exploratorium in San Francisco saw the opening of 2nd Skin, a blend of analog and digital clothing designs by a broad array of local artists, and two performances by Bad Unkl Sista with phenomenal Ashley Knight accompanying with opera.

Here are the photos.

Pictured above is Ashley Knight on the left and Amy Leblanc peering through on the right.

Yuri’s Night Bay Area 2008 at NASA Ames Moffett Field

Monday, April 14th, 2008

In honor of the first man in space, Yuri’s Night is celebrated with parties around the world. NASA Ames at Moffett Field throws a particularly entertaining one. Buzz Aldrin delivered a humorous speech, and performances/artists (pictured herein) include Zoë Keating, Freezepop, Gamelan X, Miguel and Angelo, Shrine, Michael Christian, and of course, the dark and bizarre Bad Unkl Sista — with whom I was performing.

Many of these images –particularly the blurred and chaotic ones (such as Domini, pictured above) — were taken from within a performance. My role was as one of Anastazia’s characters (of Bad Unkl Sista), but also the photographer (no surprise, that). We don’t do that “tired professional” jeans-and-a-tshirt with a backwards baseball cap photographer nonsense here.

Here is the gallery.

One highlight: I saw a men dressed in a full Soviet military officer’s uniform, and exclaimed how fantastic that was to see on a US military facility; overhearing me, an older gentlemen — with a NASA badge — turns to me and says, “That’s the general of the base.” We love you, NASA.

And for entertainment value, here is my off-camera flash, disguised and very Bad Unkl (my design!)

Yuri’s Night flyer

I perform this Saturday with Bad Unkl Sista at Yuri’s Night Bay Area, at NASA‘s Moffett Field (map) in Mountain View (between Google and Yahoo). We’re on at 11, but will wander about all day.

See past Bad Unkl Sista performances at 111 Minna, Supperclub, and Eternal Spring.

Zoë Keating and Loop Station at the Red Devil Lounge

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Zoë Keating (cellist for Rasputina) and Loop Station played at the Red Devil Lounge this past Thursday; here are some photos.

Zoë shared her Loop!Station donut (they brought four dozen!) with me. They were good times. PS: Do it for the donut!

Autechre “live” at Mezzanine, San Francisco — photos

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

In a staggering display of ego or — or, perhaps, a woefully out-of-touch moment — Autechre “performed” live and insisted that it be in complete and total darkness. Whether they were actually up there, twiddling knobs, flipping switches and pushing buttons we’ll never know. Perhaps it was them. Perhaps it was an iPod. All I do know is that if I wanted to yawn uncontrollably and listen to music in the dark, I could have stayed home: I wouldn’t have had to pay to get in, and the drinks are free. There was a fantastic split between the drugged-out hyped-up kids dancing like electrocuted chickens right next to people nodding off or just sitting on the floor, their faces a countenance of crushing boredom.

We walked out.

Did I actually take pictures at the supposed live performance of Autechre this past Saturday? Or did I simply whip up this “photo” in Photoshop? You’ll never know, and you couldn’t tell the difference anyway.

Gooferman Day!

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Photos from Gooferman Day (celebrated at Annie’s Social Club) are up. Though taking place on a weeknight and barely promoted, attendance was good and composed almost entirely of friends and family — and thus much ridiculousness was had.  And hot on the heels of their Southwest tour, it was the best set I’ve heard Gooferman play yet.

Pictured above: Goofermerch! Coming soon to a website near you.
